The Advanced Ads team

The history of Advanced Ads

2012

Three years after Thomas Maier, the founder of Advanced Ads, had started his ad-monetized publishing business, he was fed up with the ad management plugins on the market. Their lack of features kept him from using responsive ads, caching his website, or split testing for better ad performance, for example.

This frustration led him to develop custom code for his team’s use that facilitated, not hindered ad management. He would later consolidate and publish this in-house project as Advanced Ads.

Soon, he got help from international developers to take care of the software that became increasingly vital to running his business and financing the writing staff. At its peak, the website attracted 40 million visitors per month.

2014

Having put the code in order and making sure to adhere to WordPress conventions, we released Advanced Ads as a free plugin to the public. Due to its tailored set of features and its roots in authentic publishing, the plugin quickly gained acclaim in the community.

After this success of our free ad manager tool and in a bid to recruit more help as well as speed up development, we released the premium add-on Advanced Ads Pro.

In the same year, we also launched the first add-ons that equip users with specialized ad management features not found in the free version nor in Advanced Ads Pro: the PopUp and Layer Ads, Responsive Ads (now “AMP Ads”), and Sticky Ads add-ons.

2015

With the software gaining momentum, listening to user feedback and receiving feature requests convinced us to develop and release the next add-ons, Slider and Tracking.

More than other add-ons, Advanced Ads Tracking separates our products from those of the competition. To this day, its unique set of features for ad interaction analysis is one of the strongest selling points of our All Access bundle.

2016

To expand the already enormous suite of visitor and display conditions with geolocation-based ad delivery, we released the Geo-Targeting add-on. It would live on for 8 years, until its inclusion into Advanced Ads Pro in 2022.

Close cooperation with professional publishers prompted the creation of the Selling Ads add-on for expert users looking to monetize their site through direct ad sales.

Committed to keeping up with industry standards, we integrated passive Cache Busting into the Pro add-on.

This year marks when Joachim joined the company as the first employee, assisting with support as well as manual and content writing.

2017

Spurred by reaching 50,000 active installations on the WordPress plugin directory, we released the free AdSense In-feed plugin, which also complements Advanced Ads.

The premium version got a major upgrade to 2.0 and our customers gained Lazy Loading, Click Fraud Protection, and fallbacks for blocked ads. The list of pro features was further extended with the addition of the Post List placement and Ad Refresh functionality.

That year, we received an invitation to the Google EMEA headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, for a soft launch event of their Auto Ads feature. This led to an official endorsement of Advanced Ads by Google.

2018

Google pushed their Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) format, but we were ready and adapted our Responsive Ads add-on (now “AMP Ads”), allowing auto-conversion of AdSense ads for AMP.

2019

To take the next step in their consolidation, we spun off the Advanced Ads plugin and its add-ons into their own eponymous company.

Eager to strengthen the bond with our thriving community, we organized a pub meeting ahead of WordCamp Europe in Berlin. There, we thoroughly enjoyed talking to our users, seeing them connect, and learning about their approaches to website monetization.

That year, we entered six-figure territory with 100,000 active installations.

2020

We released the Google Ad Manager add-on that facilitates import from Google’s ad organizer solution for mid-sized publishers.

The enactment of the GDPR two years before had rattled the industry. We assisted in complying with it by releasing support for the IAB’s Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) with our Pro add-on.

2021

After reworking the code, fully rewriting the frontend tracking methods, and adding tracking on AMP pages, we released a completely overhauled version 2.0 of our Tracking add-on.

Also, strong synergetic benefits for our mutual users convinced us to enter a cooperation with BuddyBoss and develop a dedicated integration for their popular membership plugin and Advanced Ads.

2022

To make the switch from the free version to our premium add-on even more attractive to users by adding geolocation-based ad delivery, we moved the functionality of our Geo-Targeting add-on into Advanced Ads Pro.

Through close cooperation with AAWP, users running both our plugins were now able to enjoy dedicated ad types for Amazon affiliate product boxes or lists.

2023

Burdened by the executive and administrative roles he had to fulfill, Thomas tried to go back to working on practical tasks as a team member and a peer among colleagues.

After months of deliberation and negotiations, he handed over control of Advanced Ads to MonetizeMore, a Canadian company specialized in helping web publishers and app developers monetize their projects with their custom services and tools since 2010. The team joined MonetizeMore and Thomas, too, continued to work as an advisor for Advanced Ads.

Relieved about the smooth transition, we recommenced our work and released the eye-catching Parallax Ads feature for Advanced Ads Pro.

2024

With knowledge and resources provided by the new parent company, the Advanced Ads team takes on projects and ideas that have long lain dormant.

We have kicked off campaigns to fulfill users’ feature requests; we are in the process of rewriting most of the plugins’ code for stability and compatibility; and we are revisiting our products’ user interfaces to apply thoughtful, measured changes for improved user experience.

The basic free Advanced Ads plugin will have many of these changes released with its 2.0 update. We hope you’ll like them and that you consider signing up for our newsletter so we can update you on our future work.

The success stories of Advanced Ads users

Peer Wandiger

Peer Wandiger from Germany is an experienced publisher who specializes in building niche websites, which he monetizes with various advertising strategies. With Advanced Ads, he has created a powerful ad setup that brings him more income than he gained with AdSense.

“On many blogs and websites, I use Advanced Ads to display advertising banners or to show my own teaser banner. The opportunity to collect ads in groups and then distribute them on placements is really great. You can use it to implement almost any desired advertising placement, even if you first have to familiarize yourself with it a little.

I sell ad space to companies on ‘Selbstständig im Netz’, and now and then, there are special requirements. For example, one customer only wants to display one banner, while another customer wants to display rotating banners. In addition, the order of these customer banners should then be random. All of this is possible with Advanced Ads.”

We love to help our publishers reach their goals. A special moment for us is when projects grow out of a hobby into a serious business that can make a living for its owner. This is why we were super excited when our user Frédéric Le Guen mentioned that he was able to increase his ad revenue by 100% with the features provided by Advanced Ads.

“My daily income was around €30 per day, and with Advanced Ads, I generate €60 now. Very helpful was the way to create a Placement automatically. I have more than 200 articles. So just with one setting, I was able to put an ad before each first paragraph of my articles.

I recommend the simplicity of adding ads in an article with the specific Advanced Ads block within the new WordPress interface. Also, the functionality to embed and fix ads in the sidebar. I have to say that I haven’t tested all the features (like Popup and Layer Ads). So maybe there are also great other options.”

Veith Schörgenhummer

Our customer Veith Schörgenhummer from Germany is an experienced publisher and Advanced Ads user. Over the years, he has specialized in the topic of castles and has built an extensive website about it. In his interview, we discuss strategies and talk about the aspects of monetizing a travel and destination site.

“We tested AdSense for several months with pretty mixed results. We want to present products and services related to our editorial content. But the filter mechanics offered by AdSense didn’t give us enough control over the displayed ads, so we decided to go for our own solution based on Advanced Ads.

In the early days, we integrated ads via simple WordPress mechanics (custom post types > tags, categories). With the ads becoming more complex (more complex rules, responsive targeting, etc.), we started vetting ‘ad frameworks’ and ultimately decided to use Advanced Ads. It’s a one-stop shop with a very clean code. With 50+ plugins in play, this is crucial for us. And—in case we need it—the support is awesome.
